Caledonian MacBrayne confirm appointment of new Technical Director
06 July 2004

Ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne has confirmed the appointment of John Kerr C.Eng., MIMarEST as the Company’s new Technical Director.

Mr Kerr (46) succeeds Tom McNeill who will shortly be retiring from Caledonian MacBrayne.

John takes up his duties on Monday, June 28 having been employed most recently by V Ships as Fleet Technical Director for their UK office, with responsibility for the management of approximately 80 ships. One of his first priorities will be to undertake a tour of the network to familiarise himself with staff and CalMac’s routes.

Confirming Mr. Kerr’s appointment, Caledonian MacBrayne Chairman Dr Harold Mills, said: “John comes to Caledonian MacBrayne with extensive experience of the marine industry having dealt with a wide range of companies and sectors of the shipping industry onshore and at sea. We all wish him well as he begins his new challenge with CalMac. John will be working with Tom MacNeil over the next few weeks to ensure that there is a smooth transition before he finishes on a date which will be confirmed shortly.”

Mr. Kerr said: “The job of Technical Director with Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd offers many challenges and is unique. I am sure that the experience I have gained in the various sectors of the industry with which I have been involved will stand me in good stead as I join the company at a particularly challenging time. In today’s world, customer expectations are very high. They want a service that is safe and reliable. They want it to meet their requirements and they want value for money.  I will obviously be using the first few weeks of my appointment to familiarize myself with all aspects of the operation and I am very much looking forward to working with my new colleagues to enhance CalMac’s reputation even further and to keep us at the forefront of the shipping industry and customers’ minds.”

John Kerr joined the Merchant Navy as Engineering Cadet and progressed through the ranks to sail as Chief Engineer prior to coming ashore as Technical Superintendent.  His former employers include Harrisons Clyde/Stirling Shipping Ltd (1976-1986); Lion Shipping (1989); Strathclyde Education department (1990 as temporary lecturer); Acomarit UK LTD (various sectors, 1990-2001); V Ships UK Ltd (2001-current).

He is married with a son and daughter and lives in Bishopton, listing his hobbies as hill walking, camping and swimming.
