Caledonian MacBrayne confirm improvements to Islay timetable
19 September 2002

The island of Islay is to receive significantly improve ferry services next summer. The details of the new schedule of services were presented to members of the Shipping Services, Advisory Committee (North) at the weekend and have been warmly welcomed on the island.

Caledonian MacBrayne has confirmed that MV Isle of Arran will be deployed on a series of additional sailings to the island of Islay for nineteen weeks next summer, from May 23 until September 29. Caledonian MacBrayne Managing Director Lawrie Sinclair said: “The company believes that these additional sailings, along with the additional deployment of MV Lord of the Isles from Oban to other islands represent major improvements to the services offered to residents and visitors. Commercial operators also receive major enhancements to their own schedules, which, coupled with the decision to propose no increase on fares for of commercial traffic for 2003-4, should benefit the economies of fragile island communities.”

Fay Harris, CalMac Route Manager for Islay added: “The company has recognised for some time that there are significant constraints on the Islay service in terms of capacity and these are being addressed in terms of the study we are presently commissioning. However, in the shorter term, we are delighted to be able to provide enhanced services next summer due to the deployment of additional ships working out of Oban. This will represent the single biggest expansion of our services to Islay for many years and it will go a long way to addressing the concerns of residents and visitors alike. There are improvements to and from Islay on six days of the week; further potential for Sunday trips; potential for the development of the general day trip market and a whole range of options for travelling to and from the island on a daily basis for meetings or other appointments which we are delighted to provide.”

The new timetable for CalMac’s summer services, which is due to be published in November, will start on Friday, April 4, 2003. This allows the inclusion of a variety of school holiday dates and the moveable feast that is Easter.  All mainland and island bus connections will also be maintained in the new schedule. The additional summer timetabling of MV Isle of Arran will not form part of the core timetable for Islay and may be subject to change if the ship is required for short-term cover due to major breakdowns elsewhere.
