Figures just released show that the number of passengers travelling
by
Caledonian MacBrayne ferry to a major islands festival has hit new
heights.
CalMac were one of the supporters of this year's Hebridean Celtic
Festival
(HCF), one of the leading events of its kind in Europe. The
partnership has
had a double-edged effect with almost 8,900 passengers and
1,750 cars making
the return trip (Monday to Monday) from Ullapool to
Stornoway for the
four-day event.
This increase on figures for the same time last year (14th July-21st
July)
represents a remarkable four per cent rise and a significant boost to
the
Western Isles economy.
HCF Director, Caroline MacLennan, said: "It is very welcome news that
the
festival's relationship with CalMac has brought mutual benefits. CalMac
have
seen a positive impact on their figures due to the festival
attracting
visitors from 39 countries around the world. We in turn have been
able to
better the quality of the event with the support of CalMac. We have
a
partnership which should be developed further."
Mary Anne Campbell, CalMac's Route Manager based in Stornoway, said: "We
are
pleased to have created a working relationship with the Hebridean
Celtic
Festival which has had such a positive effect on the fortunes of
the
festival, CalMac and the local economy.
"These figure increases have highlighted the quality of the festival and
the
vital role CalMac performs."
The festival stages a series of top musical acts in a marquee in the
grounds
of Lews Castle and was headlined this year by The Waterboys. Other
community
based workshops and music performances are also delivered during
the
festival which is a family-friendly event. This year it was attended by
over
10,000 people.
