CalMac’s MV Pioneer final sailing details
20 August 2003

Caledonian MacBrayne’s MV Pioneer will make her final journey as part of the fleet on Sunday, August 31 with a special sailing from Gourock to Tighnabruaich returning to Gourock via BurntIsland in the Kyles of Bute, East Kyle, and RothesayBay.

The journey marks the end of MV Pioneer’s 29-year service with CalMac. Company Historian Iain McCrorie, who has just completed a new book on “Sea Routes from Mallaig” and another entitled “MV Pioneer”, which will be launched on August 31, said: “MV Pioneer began her service on August 14, 1974 and is held in great affection by people throughout the CalMac network as she has seen service in almost every sector of the operation. This is a magnificent chance for the many people who held her in such great affection to say fond farewells.”

Everyone joining MV Pioneer’s last sailing will receive a signed copy of Ian McCrorie’s book “MV Pioneer”. Tickets, priced £25 are only available by phone from the Clyde River Steamer Club (John Newth on 01369 706865), or from the Ticket Office, Gourock.   The cruise will depart Gourock at 1500 on Sunday, August 31 and arrive in Tighnabruaich at 1730, having journeyed via Largs, Garroch Head, Ardlamont Point and West Kyle. MV Pioneer will depart Tighnabruaich at 1800 and return to Gourock where she is due at 1945 approximately.

Before MV Pioneer sails to Tighnabruaich, she will be held in reserve until she begins a hectic final stage in her career ferrying passengers on the Upper Clyde during the Bute Highland Games weekend and between Gourock and Dunoon for the Cowal Highland Gathering.

Tickets for the final sailing of MV Pioneer are limited and will be sold on a first-come-first served basis. CalMac passes are not valid.   Tickets are non-refundable.

On the day of sailing, a 45-minute check-in will be applied for the completion of Passenger Registration details.
