Savourna Stevenson pulls strings at Gourock
27 August 2003

Ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne’s revamped Gourock terminal building is the unlikely setting for a live performance by one of Scotland ’s leading musicians tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon at 3pm. Virtuoso clarsach player, Savourna Stevenson is known as a composer whose work crosses the boundaries between classical, folk, world music and jazz.  She will be appearing at Gourock to mark confirmation of CalMac’s  support for “Magic and Monsters”, a Children’s Classic Concert which will take place at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Saturday October 4.

The concert will be featuring the World Premiere of Misterstourworm The Kelpie’s Gift, which is a brand new composition for children. Savourna’s new composition is the result of a Scottish

Arts Council Creative Scotland Award, won in 2001 and it is based on the concept of Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf”.

CalMac’s Sales and Marketing Manager Julie Keough said: “Through our support, Children’s Classic Concerts will be working with Savourna Stevenson on related education projects in schools and with young people.  One of the first is planned to take place on Bute in September 2003 and will be led by Savourna, supported by orchestral musicians from the RSNO.  The children, including some with special needs, will have the opportunity to create their own music and explore the sounds made by various instruments. Thursday is all about our customers and staff getting the chance to see and hear one of the country’s greatest musicians live and find out more about the work of Children’s Classic Concerts. Everyone is most welcome.”

Workshops in at least three primary schools in the Gourock area will take place in the fortnight before the concert.  All the children will be invited to attend the concert in their school parties.  In addition, Savourna has generously agreed to give a small concert in the waiting area at Gourock for the enjoyment of staff and customers on Thursday, August 28, as the Cowal Gathering crowds assemble to travel to Dunoon.
