Sixth Year of CalMac Support for Gaelic Festival

Sixth Year of CalMac Support for Gaelic Festival
Back

29 March 2007

Caledonian MacBrayne has announced that it is to continue as the main commercial supporter of the Royal National Mod for a sixth consecutive year at Mod 2007 in Lochaber. The Mod, Scotland’s premier Gaelic cultural festival, will take place in Lochaber from 12th to 20th October and organisers are delighted to have retained the support of CalMac for this year’s event.

Calum Iain MacLeod, Chief Executive of An Comunn Gàidhealach which oversees the organisation of the annual, nine-day festival said "This is great news once again for the Mod. To have CalMac involvement as the main commercial supporter of the Mod is great for the event and confirms the continuing commitment that CalMac has to supporting the development and growth of the Gaelic language and culture across the West Coast and Highlands and Islands of Scotland"

CalMac, many of whose employees are Gaelic speakers and who participate regularly at the National Mod and at many of the Provincial Mods throughout Scotland, first supported the Royal National Mod when it was held in Largs in 2002.

Lawrie Sinclair, Managing Director of Caledonian MacBrayne said "CalMac is delighted to continue its long association with the Royal National Mod which is one of Scotland's foremost cultural events. The Royal National Mod is a very important event for Caledonian MacBrayne as a company and for many of our staff throughout the network who take part in different ways either as competitors or in supporting roles. Support for Gaelic language and cultural festivals such as the Mod are key components of our Gaelic Plan which we published recently and also as part of our marketing strategy and we are delighted to once again be the main commercial supporters of the Royal National Mod"
The support from CalMac for Mod 2007 will also see continued support for the Provincial Mods which take place from May to September. Iain Mackinnon Chairman of Mull Provincial Mod welcomed the support from CalMac. He said "There are something like 20 Provincial Mods staged in Scotland each year and each one is run by volunteers who have to work hard to raise the necessary funding. The support of an organisation like Calmac is very welcome and will be a boost to the efforts of those working at community level to promote and develop Gaelic through the Local Mods"

Mod 2007 will feature as the main Gaelic cultural event during the Scottish Year of Highland Culture celebrations and will see a packed programme of competitive and informal, non-competitive events and activities for visitors and competitors alike during the nine days of the Mod.
