Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute

Mount Stuart House

A little bit of everything in a large estate

A remarkable neo-gothic mansion. Built in the 19th Century,  Mount Stuart is a feat of Victorian engineering and was one of the most technologically advanced houses of its age. It was an impressive house of firsts - the first house with a heated indoor swimming pool, and the first house in the country to benefit from electric light, central heating, a telephone system and a passenger lift. Testament to the engineers involved in the construction of the house - all of these features are still working today. It boasts impressive architecture, lavish interiors, local heritage, extensive gardens, regional produce and hand-made gifts. Don't miss the restaurant, either, where the chefs use as much produce from the kitchen garden as they can.
