Ullapool to Stornoway Ticketing Trial FAQs

The Ullapool to Stornoway route in the Outer Hebrides will be the first to trial new enhancements to the CalMac ticketing system. The pilot begins later this month and is expected to last approximately four weeks. During this period all elements of the new upgrades will be trialled and customer feedback is very welcome.

Q. What is changing for me?

  • You can now purchase your passenger only tickets online

  • You can print your tickets and boarding card at home

  • You can collect your pre-printed boarding card at the port with your tickets

  • You will now require a ticket for infants - under-fives (free of charge)

  • Your tickets will have barcodes

  • Barcodes will be electronically scanned by CalMac staff at the port
     

Q. When will these changes happen?

  • Infant tickets are now available and all tickets are barcoded

  • We will be capturing information for boarding cards during the online booking process from Friday 3rd June

  • From the afternoon of Monday the 6th June customers will be able to book passenger only tickets online and print tickets at home
     

Q. Do I have to have an online account?

A. Not at the moment, but you will need one to be able to amend bookings online -which is due later this year.
 

Q. Can I book and purchase 'passengers only' tickets online?

A. Yes
 

Q. Can I print tickets at home?

A. Yes - if you complete your booking online or through the contact centre, you will now be able to print your tickets at home.
 

Q. If I book online, do I have to write out boarding cards?

A. No, if you provide the information when booking, your boarding card can now be printed at home or collected at port.  This is also the case if you book through the contact centre.
 

Q. Why does my ticket look different?

A. It now has a barcode so we can quickly scan and check your ticket.
 

Q. Is my 'passenger only' ticket for a specific sailing?

A. Yes it is, once you have purchased your ticket you are guaranteed a place on that sailing.
 

Q. What will change at the port?

A. CalMac staff will now use handheld scanners to check the barcode on your ticket.  This will be carried out in the car lanes or the passenger access entrance.
 

Q. What if I want to amend my ticket?

A. We have plans to introduce online booking amendments later this year, in the meantime please contact the contact centre or port.
 

Q. Can I still collect my tickets at the port?

A. Yes, you will now also be handed a boarding card for each leg of your journey.
 

Q. Can I still buy my tickets at the port and write out my own boarding card?

A. Yes
 

Q. Do I still have to be at the port 45 minutes prior to departure?

Yes you do, 45 minutes prior to departure for vehicles and 30 minutes for foot passengers.
