CalMac clarifies position on caravans in Colonsay
Back
26 June 2006
Ferry operator CalMac is clarifying it position with regard to shipment of caravans and camper vans to Colonsay, following what it describes as “misrepresentation” in some sections of the media.
CalMac does not, and never has banned these vehicles from the ferry or from the island.
Hugh Dan MacLennan, Head of Communication and Customer Care said: “I am absolutely bewildered as to how the conversation I had with a reporter explaining the position can be misrepresented as an attack on our moral position in "banning" such traffic. For the avoidance of any doubt, CalMac advises customers as part of our booking service, of the circumstances on the island. It is for the laird and the islanders to manage the island as they wish. CalMac will continue to advise customers that we will ship the vehicles but that they are not allowed to stay on the island. This course of action, we believe, will help avoid disappointment when it is discovered that they cannot stay on the island with their vehicles. There are no facilities on the island for these vehicles to be used for overnight accommodation without permission.”
CalMac also points out that this situation has pertained for many years and says it is a complete mystery why this misrepresentation should now occur.
The Company will continue to ship vehicles to Colonsay and back, but the circumstances of their staying on the island for any length of time remains a matter for the laird and the islanders, as it has always done.
Customers requiring assistance with their travel to Colonsay with respect to caravans and camper vans should contact the Colonsay office directly on 01951 200320.
