History:

Some time ago, the old farmstead at Torabhaig was identified as the perfect location for a small, traditional distillery, with all the factors needed to make good, robust island whisky. We were also fortunate to start with a handsome, rugged building, just in need of some love and attention.

After four years our 19th century steading was fully restored to hold the gleaming copper stills and traditional wooden wash-backs and should allow us to produce whisky here for the next two hundred years. Our stills were commissioned in 2017 and we started on our journey to produce Torabhaig Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Whisky:

Welcome to the Torabhaig way. We are an independent distillery on the Isle of Skye. Our signature release, Taigh, or House, in English, is an expression of our very own house style, exploring subtle, elegant flavours of peat. We call it Smoke with Taste. We started to distil at Torabhaig in 2017 and released the first of four expressions in our Legacy series in 2021. The series follows our journey expression by expression. We are now at chapter 4 with Torabhaig Sound of Sleat. An elegant whisky with a waxy mouthfeel, light zesty spice, sweet bonfire smoke, hint of vanilla, honey, beeswax and brine on the palate. Slowly developing notes of sweet spice, seaweed and marmalade.

Tours:

The best way to really get to know us is a guided tour of the distillery. Our tour will take you behind the scenes into the heart of the production area and give you a unique insight into life in a working Hebridean Island distillery. Our guides will help you experience all stages of the whisky making process, grain to spirit, before concluding with a tutored whisky tasting. With three tours to choose from this year, you can book onto a regular tour, a chocolate tour or a warehouse tour. Some of these are few and far between so it really is advisable to book.

Café and Shop:

Our café serves freshly prepared sandwiches at lunch time, with whisky flights, refreshments, baking and snacks available from 11am until close. (Café opening hours sometimes differ, so please check our website for accurate information.) These can be enjoyed sitting in our cosy café or on a fine day, outside in the courtyard. The distillery shop is well stocked with whiskies, locally produced gifts and our own range of distillery apparel.
