Here we create exceptional island spirits inspired by the wild beauty, rich heritage and resilient community of the Isle of Barra. From our award-winning Isle of Barra Gin, distilled with hand-harvested carrageen seaweed, to the carefully crafted Island Dark Rum, every bottle captures the character and essense of this remarkable island. 

Founded in 2017 by husband-and-wife team Katie and Michael Morrison, Isle of Barra Distillers was established with a vision to create premium spirits that celebrate the island they call home. As the first legal distillery on Barra, the business has become an important part of our local community, creating employment, supporting sustainable practices, and sharing the story of the Outer Hebrides with visitors and spirit lovers around the world. 

More than simply a distillery, Isle of Barra Distillers is a celebration of island life - where craftsmanship, provenance and hospitality come together to create authentic Hebridean spirits with a true sense of place.

Experience Barra's Distillery

Located in the island's main village of Castlebay, Isle of Barra Distillers welcomes visitors to discover the stories behind its award-winning spirits. Set against the spectacular backdrop of Kisimul Castle and the Atlantic Ocean, our small island distillery offers a warm Hebridean welcome and an opportunity to experience authentic island craftsmanship first-hand. 

While we are unable to offer guided tours at our current distillery, we are excited to be building our new single malt whisky distillery, where we'll soon be able to welcome visitors for an immersive behind-the-scenes experience. In the meantime, we'd love to welcome you to our distillery shop in Castlebay. Our friendly team is always happy to share the story of Isle of Barra Distillers, chat about our spirits and offer a taste of our award-winning range.

Whether you're visiting for a day or staying a little longer, there's no shortage of unforgettable experiences to enjoy on Barra. 

Start your adventure with one of Scotland's most iconic journeys, flying from Glasgow aboard Loganair's Twin Otter and touching down on the sands of Traigh Mhòr - the world's only scheduled beach runway. From the moment you arrive, you'll be immersed in the island's spectacular landscapes, rich heritage and warm Hebridean hospitality.

Explore Barra at your own pace, stopping at traditional honesty boxes filled with handmade crafts and island treats, before sampling the fresh seafood and local flavours served in the island's welcoming cafés, hotels and restaurants.

No visit is complete without a walk along the white sands of nearby Vatersay Beach. For the adventurous, a dip in its crystal-clear turquoise waters is a true Hebridean rite of passage - just be prepared for a refreshing chill, whatever the weather! Afterwards, there's no better way to warm the cockles than with a well-earned dram of Barra spirit.
