CalMac lends support to Year of Young People 2018

Ferry operator CalMac is supporting the Scottish Government's Year of Young People (YoYP) 2018 with two new ticketing initiatives.

Driven by the new CalMac Community and Stakeholder Engagement directorate, a survey was carried out to establish a selection of different initiatives to support YoYP 2018, in addition to those already in place.

Feedback from the CalMac Community Board showed ticketing support as a key theme and following further consideration the decision was taken to contribute to the work of the YoYP Ambassadors by offering incentives to get out and explore Scotland.

Around 500 YoYP 2018 Ambassadors have been recruited to make sure that young people and organisations in local communities all over the country know about YoYP 2018 activities and events. Ambassadors residing within the islands CalMac serve are being supported with a selection of free vouchers to YoYP events and all other YoYP Ambassadors (including those on the mainland) will be supplied with a complimentary 50% off travel voucher.

YoYP 2018 is a celebration of the nation's young people and a platform to give them a stronger voice on issues that affect their lives and showcase their talents and achievements.

'We're fully behind the Year of Young People and are keen to use our network to spread the word about what's happening as much as possible,' said CalMac's Director of Community and Stakeholder Engagement, Brian Fulton.

'As a key connector of island communities we are ideally placed to help ensure that our young people, no matter where they are, are able to get involved. It is a privilege to support the YoYP 2018 Ambassadors and all the hard work they are doing alongside thousands of other young Scots. We hope that this small gesture will make it easier for them to get to Year of Young People events. Thanks also to Young Scot for all the support they have given us in getting this great initiative up and running'

Young Scot, as Scotland's national youth information and citizenship charity, are the leading partners behind the year. Working with partners Children in Scotland and the Scottish Youth Parliament, they are co-ordinating the year's Ambassador Programme.

Louise Macdonald, Chief Executive of Young Scot said; 'It's brilliant that CalMac are embracing the spirit of the Year of Young People 2018 by offering this fantastic discount. We want to reach all young people all over Scotland so having a discount like this helps young people get involved in the celebrations.'
