Race is on for Barrathon runners

Barra Sunset

Ferry operator CalMac is running a special overnight sailing to ensure runners can make the start line at the Barrathon 2015 race on Saturday.

Strike action by the RMT union on Friday, June 26 was jeopardising the race's success. But the company, after liaising with race organisers has agreed to put on a special sailing to what is one of the biggest events on the island's calendar.

The sailing leaves Oban on Saturday, June 27 at 00.46 arriving at Castlebay at 05.46.

Calmac, Head of Operations, Matt Harrison said:

"We know how important this event is for the community on the island, so despite the disruption caused by the RMT union's strike action we were keen to pull out all the stops to make it a success.

"As an integral part of the communities we serve, we know the problems this action is having on day to day lives, but we are committed to doing all we can to minimise it in the face of very challenging circumstances."

The Barrathon is a half marathon, fun run and junior fun run around the island and attracts around 300 competitors from all over the country

Barrathon organiser Katie MacNeil said:

"I'm very pleased that CalMac have decided to lay on this special sailing to get people to the island. We have already had some cancellations but hopefully this will help ensure a good turnout. I'd urge people to try and get this early sailing if they possibly can, it's a great event and well worth the trip."
