Background

In 2017, pilot surveys were conducted across West Scotland on a number of CalMac Ferries routes and from these surveys, three routes were selected for further study in 2018. These were; Ullapool - Stornoway, Oban - Castlebay and Oban- Coll - Tiree - Oban - Colonsay - Oban.  Two new routes were added to the programme for 2019; Uig - Tarbert/Lochmaddy and Adrossan - Campbeltown bringing increased survey coverage to these important marine habitats. The programme is constantly developing with ORCA coordinating the surveys and our Wildlife Officer on the hunt to add further hotspot areas to our survey list.

On these routes, ORCA Marine Mammal Surveyors regularly observe lunging minke whales, large pods of dolphins, bonxies, white-tailed eagles, and many more species.
